AASL Standard 4

School library media candidates administer the library media program in order to support the mission of the school, and according to the principles of best practice in library science and program administration.

Project:  Order (Objective, List, Older Rationale, Rationale, Process Check)
Summary:  The order is the selection, purchase, and process of books that match the objectives of the school and its library media program.
Justification:  The order supports the school mission by providing materials to support the curriculum.  This assignment also uses best practices by using several strategies to select materials, such as book reviews, teacher recommendations, and the content standards.

With this activity, Lummie and I worked together to help my school's media specialist with an order for biographies she needed fulfilled.  We considered materials for the media center based on what was already available and what was needed to match up with the new Georgia Performance Standards for Social Studies, which the school would be adopting within a few years.  We used Titlewave book reviews and the standards to decide which books to purchase.  We also took advice from the media specialist on book bindings, which she preferred for the school.  This order was helpful when I had to complete my first order this year because I already had the experience.

Project:  Program Development and Evaluation Plan
Summary:  Media specialists create a program development and evaluation plan to focus their energy, time, and money on what is most important for the media center.  This plan needs to correlate to the school's improvement plan and ALA and AASL standards.  Goals are formed for a five year plan along with strategies to meet these goals.
Justification:  The program development and evaluation plan takes the best practices recommended from ALA, AASL, and other media centers to map out the school's program.  Strategies are designed to match with those best practices and provide efficiency in administration of the program.

When our group created our project development and evaluation plan, we took into consideration the missions of our respective schools as well as the goals from the American Library Association and the American Association of School Librarians when we developed our goals.  We each printed several plans from the Internet and compared those with the standards to develop the plan.  Several of our strategies were from other plans, and we found many repetitions.  We decided as a group what we felt was most important and used that in our plan.  I will use this plan as I develop a new one for my school.
